"My name is Rick Stevens. I am the president of the Parkinson Network of Mt. Diablo (PNMD). I have Parkinson’s. "Table Tennis for Life" made a presentation to our group this fall as an introduction, and our Board decided that this activity would benefit our members. We promote the program in our listing of classes and activities that enhance the physical fitness of people with Parkinson's (PWP). Numerous studies have shown the benefits of physical activity in slowing the rate of progression of the disease.
Table tennis is beneficial for those with Parkinson’s disease because of its focus on balance, hand-eye coordination, rhythmic movements and concentration. The weekly classes provide both exercise and social interaction for our members. Having instructors that are younger brings enjoyment to PWP, many of whom are senior citizens. In addition, Tanvi and Aarav also chase balls, relieving the players of those safety concerns.
Various studies have been undertaken to illustrate the benefits of table tennis. As one article put it: “Research has shown table tennis is uniquely beneficial for those with Parkinson’s disease because of its focus on balance, hand-eye coordination, rhythmic movements and concentration.” A number of studies have found that patients who participated in a ping pong program showed significant improvements in motor function, balance, and cognitive function.” https://news.nm.org/northwestern-medicine-serves-up-parkinsons-players-ping-pong-in-lake-forest-and-chicago/
Although we have not conducted a scientific survey of our members who have participated, they are all enthusiastic about the program and always mention the dedication and expertise of the two instructors, Tanvi and Aarav. It is a popular program and we would like to make it available to more of our members. As a final sweetener for participants, the classes are offered free to members.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Micro Motion Table Tennis Club in Pleasanton for standing behind Tanvi and Aarav in their "Table Tennis For Life" non-profit, 501(c), initiative. Your support is transforming lives and making a profound impact on the Parkinson’s community. Together with "Table Tennis For Life", you are creating a difference that truly matters."

"As a neurosurgeon specializing in Parkinson's disease, I've witnessed firsthand the devastating impact this condition can have on patients' lives. While surgical interventions like VIM Thalamotomy offer significant relief, a holistic approach is essential for optimal outcomes. This is where the power of table tennis shines through.
In my professional opinion, the structured physical activity provided by table tennis plays a critical role in managing Parkinson's symptoms. The sport's demands on hand-eye coordination, quick reflexes, and strategic thinking align perfectly with the therapeutic needs of Parkinson's patients. Regular table tennis sessions help improve motor skills, enhance cognitive function, and provide much-needed social interaction. These benefits collectively improve the overall quality of life for those affected by the disease.
Beyond the physical benefits, table tennis is a mental workout. It demands focus, concentration, and quick decision-making, all of which can be challenged in Parkinson's patients. Regular play can help sharpen cognitive abilities and enhance overall brain function.
Moreover, table tennis is a social activity. The company and support found on the table tennis court can be invaluable for patients who often feel isolated. It provides a sense of belonging and purpose, which can significantly boost mood and overall well-being.
I applaud Tanvi and Aarav Desai's inspiring work in launching the 'Table Tennis For Life' initiative. Their commitment to improving the lives of Parkinson's patients is truly commendable and serves as a source of inspiration for all of us. By making table tennis accessible to the community, they offer countless individuals a lifeline.
I encourage everyone to embrace the power of table tennis. Whether you're a Parkinson's patient, a caregiver, or simply someone looking to improve their health, pick up a paddle and give it a try. The benefits are undeniable. I am proud to support this initiative and look forward to seeing it grow and benefit even more individuals."

”As a neuroscientist specializing in brain research, I have dedicated my career to understanding and improving brain health. I study mechanisms of memory and cognitive functions in brain circuits, with the goal of ameliorating the myriad impairments in these functions in aging and in neurological disorders such as dementia and autism. I am excited to express my admiration for 'Table Tennis For Life', an organization co-founded by the inspiring siblings Tanvi and Aarav Desai. Their initiative is not only innovative but also incredibly impactful in addressing the needs of the Parkinson's community, older adults, and individuals with autism.
'Table Tennis For Life' is committed to enhancing the quality of life for communities through table tennis. This sport has excellent therapeutic potential. The rhythmic and repetitive movements required in table tennis are highly beneficial for brain health, promoting neuroplasticity, which is the brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections. Engaging neuroplasticity mechanisms is key for older adults, helping to maintain memory and cognitive functions that can decline with age. This is also especially important for individuals with neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease, as it helps to maintain and enhance motor skills.
Engaging in table tennis can help improve hand-eye coordination, reaction time, and cognitive function. Regular practice of these activities can lead to better motor control and slower progression of symptoms for individuals with Parkinson's. Older adults who struggle with cognitive decline can experience enhanced memory, attention, and problem-solving skills. Additionally, for individuals with autism, table tennis offers a structured yet flexible environment that can significantly improve social interaction, focus, and coordination.
Tanvi and Aarav's dedication to this cause is truly inspiring. At such a young age, they have demonstrated extraordinary commitment and leadership. Their vision for 'Table Tennis For Life' goes beyond merely promoting physical activity; they and their advocates/ mentors have created a community where participants feel supported, engaged, and empowered. By providing inclusive and engaging activities, they foster not just physical health but also mental and social well-being.
In conclusion, 'Table Tennis For Life', guided by Tanvi and Aarav Desai, represents a beacon of hope and innovation in brain health. Their initiative shows the transformative power of table tennis, demonstrating that this sport can catalyze significant personal and communal change. I wholeheartedly endorse their mission and encourage others to support this exceptional cause.”
